Division A Spring Contest Results

[ No Comments ] Posted on 04.14.08 under General

Last Friday was the Division A Spring contest where the best speakers of all of the clubs in Division A competed in table topics and prepared speeches.  Congratulations to Nahetzin Velasco of Latin Leaders (583774) who won the speech contest, and Lee MacMorris of AMO Visionaries (809720) who won the table topics contest.  Both winners are from area A5.  This may be a first for our area.  It was Nahetzin’s first Division contest and she did a great job with her speech entitled “The Dance of Possibilities”.  It was very exciting to watch.  Equally impressive was Lee MacMorris’ performance.  It is enthralling to hear her speak and you know she’s going to win after the first 30 seconds into her speech.  She’s that good.  The competition though was very tough but we prevailed.  I’m so excited and I can’t wait to see you all at the District Conference on April 26.  See you all there!

The spring contest was a huge success.  We combined the three areas of A2, A4, and A5 into one contest.  Brenda Ramirez started the contest with the pledge and an inspirational message.  The table topics contestants for our area were Veronica Garfias from Latin Leaders, and Lee MacMorris from AMO Visionaries.  The table topic question was “Music is often called an international language.  What type of music influences you and how?”.  The winner of this contest was Lee MacMorris.  She gave a very vivid and colorful description of drum music which I loved hearing.  Congratulations Lee!  You’ll be going on the Division contest on April 11.  The runner up was Veronica Garfias.  This was her first contest and I know she has learned some valuable tips on speaking from this experience.

Our contestants for the international speech contest was Nahetzin Velasco from Latin Leaders and Becky Smith from AMO Visionaries.  First place went to Nahetzin who gave an inspirational talk about achieving your potential by relating her experience as a dance instructor.  Her speech was entitled “The Dance of Possibilities”.   Congratulations Nahetzin.  You will also be going on the the Division contest on April 11.  The runner up was Becky Smith who gave an equally inspiring speech on recognizing God’s creative presence in the world.  Both runner’s up should also attend the Division contest and be prepared to take the place of the winner in the case the winner is not able to make it.

My thanks to all of those who participated in the contest, judges, timers, tellers, Sgt. At Arms, contest masters, and especially to the contestants.  The contest is meant to be a learning experience and I am confident that everyone has benefited either as a participant or as a result of your participation.

Division A Makeup Training

[ No Comments ] Posted on 02.06.08 under General

Business WomanAll club officers who have not yet completed their training still have a chance to get trained.  Division A is hosting officer training at the National University in Costa Mesa on February 23rd starting at 1 PM.  This will also be the last chance for training until June.  Your club should have at least four officers trained to meet the DCP goals.  If you have never been trained as a club officer, it is important to receive this training to ensure that the members of your club are getting the most benefit from the Toastmasters program.  These training sessions are a great way to learn important skills that benefit you as a leader as well as a place to meet your counterparts from other clubs in your area.  For anyone interest in speech contests or judging a speech contest, there will be training for judges starting at 3 PM.  There is no cost for this training so there is no reason you should not attend if you are still in need of training.  Put the date on your calendar and plan to be there.  Please download the Division A Makeup Training flyer for more information.

2007 Division Fall Contest Results

Hello everyone.  I’m writing to you from the beautiful Milano, Italy, where the Smart car rules for parallel parking, and if your building doesn’t have graffiti it’s because you just repainted yesterday.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the division contest and I think everyone did a wonderful job.  I was lucky enough to have attended all of the area contests so I was able to see each contestant as they won their areas.  But at the division contest it seemed everyone was polished and on their very best, and the competition was very tough.  I thought Becky Smith gave a BEAUTIFUL performance with her tall tale speech.  I know you will continue to be a formidable competitor.  Well done!
Also congratulations to Beatriz Delgado for taking second place in the Evaluation contest.  You are amazing that you have done so well with only your fourth evaluation ever.  I hope you will continue to learn and grow and show off your skills again.
I want to thank everyone for their contributions and helping out in your area.  You all are wonderful
And lastly, congratulations to Patrick Copland of Area 1, first place Tall Tales, and to Melissa Macaloose of Area 2, first place Evaluations.

Arrivederci

Smedley Award

Dr. Ralph SmedleyA program that is offered every year is known as the Smedley Award.  I like this program because it is a really good incentive to do what everyone should already be doing anyways — growing your membership.  The rewards are very attractive.  Add 5 new, dual or reinstated members to your club by September 30 and receive a ribbon for your club banner, a module from your choice of the Leadership Excellence Series, Better Speaker Series, or Successful Club Series, and a $10 gift certificate to Toastmasters International.  You don’t need to sign up for anything, you just need to recruit members, and every club could certainly benefit from new members.  Think of it as another challenge to be accomplished.  You can read more information about the Smedley Award in this Smedley Award flyer.  Act quickly, there are only two months to complete this challenge.

Important Makeup Training

Almost every strong club in the district has regularly trained officers.  Trained officers foster healthy Toastmasters clubs just as a balanced diet fosters a healthy body.  If you want a successful club, you should make sure your officers are trained.  Besides, it’s a very easy way to fulfill one of the goals of your DCP plan and put you on your way to becoming a distinguished club.  Check the calendar on this site for dates for the makeup training and their locations, or download this Makeup Training Flyer.
